About the Friends
The Friends are an informal group of like-minded people who have an interest in the well-being of places of worship across Sussex.
Formed in 1991 the Friends exist to give support to the Sussex Historic Churches Trust and promote interest in and knowledge of places of worship of all denominations that are more than 100 years old and open for public worship.
Since it has no central funding grants, the Trust relies entirely on voluntary efforts in fundraising, careful investment of its capital funds, some legacies and most importantly from the generosity of many people.
In this way it is able to help give support to the extent of some £70,000 each year, but the amount of grants is entirely dependent upon income raised.
Sussex has a fine heritage in religious buildings and whilst a number of these are large and architecturally important there are many small but historically valuable places of worship including many of pre-Conquest date. Frequently these are in small rural places where the needs is great but the worshippers few.
